Creating a world in which people feel safe enough to share more parts of themselves with others will require changes to the policies, systems and attitudes that make people feel the need to mask in the first place.
The more we all work together to fight stigma, challenge the idea of normal, and foster open conversations, the easier it gets for people to be who they are without fear.

Unmasking Mental Health For years, I wore the mask well. The high-functioning trauma survivor. The one who pushed through pain. The one who smiled while dissociating. The one who looked “fine” on the outside. But behind that mask was a storm: PTSD Fibromyalgia. Childhood trauma that left scars invisible to most. A brain tumour. I’ve learned that unmasking mental health isn’t a one-time reveal—it’s a daily act of courage. It’s saying: “I’m struggling,” even when you want to pretend you’re not. It’s asking for help when independence was your only survival skill. It’s choosing rest in a world that praises burnout. It’s honoring the truth of your body, your mind, your past. As a therapist, I hold space for this kind of bravery every day. As a human, I practice it too. Unmasking is messy. But it’s also where healing lives. You are not broken. You are not too much. And you don’t have to carry it all alone. – Miranda #UnmaskingMentalHealth #StillStanding #TraumaSurvivor #ChronicIllnessWarrior #BrainTumour #PTSDRecovery #FibromyalgiaAwareness #ChildhoodTraumaHealing #HealingConnections
Talking to your child about their mental health builds trust. It shows them that no matter what they're facing, you're there to listen and support.
Starting a mental health conversation can be difficult. Small, open-ended questions can go a long way:
🫶 How are you feeling?
🤩 What was the best part of your day today? How did it make you feel?
😟 What was the worst part of your day?
🌟 What did you do today that made you proud?
💬 What would you like to talk about?
The questions were developed by School Mental Health Ontario. For more tips and information, visit: smho-smso.ca/
